Fun Play Based Learning Activities Designed For Young Toddlers Ages 12 – 18 Months

Young Toddler Activities

Toddler Themed Lesson Plans

Our toddler curriculum program was designed for young children between the ages of 12 and 18 months of age.

Our young toddler curriculum includes four weeks of lesson plans for each month purchased. Our aim is to introduce the children to different types of toddler safe materials in a play based learning environment. Toddlers enjoy learning through sensory activites such as water play, sand play, sticky play, etc. Our program includes lots of fun sensory hands on activites designed just for young toddlers!

Play Based Learning Activities For Young Toddlers

DIY Young toddler egg carton pegboard
DIY Egg Carton Pegboard For Young Toddlers

Egg Carton Pegboard is an easy to make activity for young toddlers. What toddler doesn't love placing items inside things, this activity was designed to capture their attention with this DIY {Do It Yourself} egg carton pegboard.

Easy to make, all you need is an egg carton, scissors and some type of pegs to use that are toddler safe. We are using old fashioned clothespins {the ones with no springs} but you can use other items too such as old markers with the tops hot glue on or maybe you already have a toy with toddler safe pegs that you can use instead of the old fashioned clothespins.

When using this activity keep a close eye on the young toddlers in your group, you may find that some are not quite ready for this activity yet or others may need to be watching closely with the old fashioned wooden clothespins, show the children how to stick the clothespins in to the holes and pull them back out.

Wow, what fun, toddlers are learning through our play based hands on activities! This math activity is teaching the young toddlers one to one correspondence.

Red Bird Story

Red Bird Book
Red Bird Book - Included In November Curriculum

“Red Bird Story” is a cute printable book included in our young toddler November curriculum.

The page shown above is a simple rhyming story and goes like this Red bird, red bird, what do you see? {lift the flap} I see a pink pig that's what I see.

We provide the words to simple songs, finger rhymes and cute simple stories in our young toddler curriculum, shown above is our "Red Bird Book" which is from our November curriculum.

The red bird book {shown above} will help to teach the children their colors through simple rhyming text and cute simple pictures plus it also offers a felt flap {sensory} on some of the pages for the children to lift up to see the hidden picture that is underneath the flap.

Sticky Sensory Play

Sensory Play Sticky Contact Paper
Sensory Play With Sticky Contact Paper

Oh! That's sticky! What fun! Tape a piece of sticky contact paper to a wall, door, window or a box, make sure you tape it sticky side out.

Touch the sticky contact paper and say "sticky" and encourage the toddlers to copy you, they will have such fun with this new sticky sensory texture.

When they start to loose interest in the sticky contact paper bring out some foam blocks and show them how they can stick these onto the contact paper and how it will stick too.

We had clear contact paper and the children couldnt tell where it was so we had to go around the outside edge with tape so they could easily see where the contact paper was located.

Children will try to stick everything on their to see if it sticks or not, even the water in their bottle.

Sort The Balls Into The Muffin Tin

Muffin Tin Play - this fun sensory activity helps young toddlers to learn about one-to-one correspondence.

A very fun and simple activity to promote young toddlers fine motor play is to place toddler-safe balls into a six cup muffin tin. Set out a small basket next to the muffin tin and show your child how to take the balls out of the muffin tin and drop them into the basket and then how they can put the balls back into the muffin tin, great fun!

To make things a bit more interesting you will need six small plastic cups that will hold the toddler balls that will fit inside the muffin tin, we used sturdy plastic yogurt cups.

This fun activity is from our January young toddler curriculum.

This is such a fun sensory play based learning activity for young toddlers, they will learn about veggies through hands on activities plus through simple songs, finger rhymes and simple stories.

Mouse needs a house story

Mouse Needs A House Story

“Mouse Needs A House” is a free printable book included in our young toddler October curriculum. Teacher will need to print out the mouse story and follow the instructions in our daily lesson plans for putting together the mouse book.

This book is available in our toddler pumpkin themed lesson plans. This is a cute story about a mouse who needs a house. If you purchase our young toddler October curriculum you can print out the story and read it to the children, this story makes a fun story time book.

Some Of Our Young Toddler’s Favorite Songs

The Wheels On The Bus
If your Happy And You Know It
Row, Row, Row Your Boat
ABC Song
Old McDonald Had A Farm

Singing aloud to the children is a fun way to help children learn develop their language skills, along with the listening and concentration skills.

Some Of Our Young Toddler’s Favorite Rhymes

The Itsy Bitsy Spider
One Two Buckle My Shoe
Humpty Dumpty Sat On A Wall
Ring A Round The Rosy
Five Little Monkeys Jumping On The Bed
Plus Many Other!

When young toddlers are listening to rhymes and songs don't expect them to actually sit still for this, as most young toddlers are on the go. But if you bring out a hand puppet most young toddlers are going to come over to listen for a few seconds or maybe a minute or two as they watch the puppet. Singing songs to the young toddlers is a great way to promote language skills development!

To capture your toddlers attention bring out a hand puppet and and sing the songs and a lot of toddlers cant talk yet or are not going to sing, you may feel like your singing to yourself, but they are listening, please make sure you sing a few songs each day, all of a sudden, one day, when they are older, you will hear them singing these songs and then you will be glad you continued singing, because even if they dont look like they are listening, they are!

Young Toddler Curriculum Program

Our young toddler curriculum is for children ages 12 to 18 months. Our curriculum lesson plans were designed to include a lot of "hands on" fun activities that involve some "Heuristic Play Materials" such as water bottles, metal cans, metal or plastic covers, egg cartons, hair rollers, shower curtain rings, napkin holders and other every day materials.

Heuristic Play Materials
What is heuristic play?

What is heuristic play? Heuristic comes from a Greek word eurisko "meaning to discover", heuristic play was developed about 30 years ago by Educational Psychologists, Elinor Goldschmeid. Heuristic play offers toddlers different types of textures and items for the toddlers to explore to help them develop their senses; touch, smell, hearing, sight and taste. Some of the items that they would include for the toddlers to play with would be plastic jars, plastic jar covers, wooden spoons, egg cartons, hair rollers, shower curtain rings, napkin holders and many other items.

Heuristic Play Materials
What About Sharing?

What About Sharing? Toddlers don't always like to share which is why we try and use items that you may already have a lot of or items you can easily get such as toilet paper rolls, jar covers, milk cartons, tissue boxes, mega blocks, etc. If there are plenty of items to go around then there will be less fighting over toys and less stress to the toddlers "feeling they need to share". One theory behind heuristic play is that you "provide a lot of materials" and only leave the materials down for a short time while the children are being "observed" playing with the items and the teachers let them play with the materials; however they want, as long as they are not hurting themselves or anyone else. We decided to use some of these "types of items" in our curriculum and to turn them into "learning activities" this way they are playing with the items and learning with them too! In our toddler curriculum we have tried to incorporate some heuristic play items with a touch of Montessori ideas and some preschool themes (changed for toddlers) to make our "hands on learning curriculum."

Toddler Magnetic Board With Letters
What Are Sensory Activities?

What Are Sensory Activities? We have tried to provide a lot of sensory activities which includes touching different textures such as fake fur, velour, corduroy, felt, and other types of textures along with handling different types of items such as metal cans {no sharp edges}, jar covers, hair rollers, and many other items along with some water play, sand play, plus some glue and paint activities, we have included glue and paint recipes which are basically just water and flour, that way if the children put the glue or paint, that you make, into their mouths, which they will, it’s a safer alternative than them putting "real glue and paint" in their mouths, with all the chemicals in it.

Learning Through Play

Egg Carton Pegboard with colored pegs
Learning Through Play

As you probably know a lot of "Toddler Curriculums" are not really suitable for toddlers. Most of the actives are too hard for the toddlers to actually master. We know that not all toddlers can do what every other toddler can do, so we have tried to make our activities as "toddler friendly" as possible for toddlers 12 to 18 months. But you may find some of the learning activities can’t be mastered by all the toddlers, don't worry, they should still be able to "play with the materials and they are learning through play" toddlers actually learn a lot from playing, through play they can learn a lot of new skills that they will use now and in the future.By using our curriculum they will be exposed to a lot of new ideas, sensory items to touch and lots of songs and rhymes to help to stimulate and encourage the toddlers to explore their environment.

Hands On Learning Program

Toddler Painting With Water On Chalkboard
Young Toddler Painting With Water On A Chalkboard

Our toddler curriculum was designed to introduce toddlers to a variety of play materials where they can learn and grow and discover the world around them.

We try to provide the toddlers in our care with a fun activity based "hands on learning program" where the young toddlers will learn by using their "five senses" by seeing pictures, by handling the learning materials, hearing songs and stories and the older toddlers will actually start learning a few basic shapes and colors through the songs, rhymes and stories and hands on learning activities that also include simple crafts and sensory play such as coloring with chunky crayons, sticking pieces of paper on sticky contact paper, painting and using glue with our homemade paint and glue recipes which is basically flour and water so if they "taste it" and they will, it won't hurt them.

A fun sensory idea is to have the children paint with water on a chalkboard or on a piece of dark colored paper, and since it is only water you don't have to worry if they decide to paint the windows, doors and floors too!

Hands On Activities

Egg Carton Pegboard with plastic eggs
Hands On Activities

Our young toddler curriculum has a group time, art/sensory time, play time, learning time along withe some cute songs and rhymes to capture the toddlers attention plus help them to learn, they can learn a lot through our toddler program. These activities are not only to entertain the children but to help them learn through sensory play and lots of fun "hands on" activities.

Enjoy the activities with your group.

We have worked very hard on getting the curriculum put together. We hope you enjoy the activities with your toddlers. We hope your toddler group has as much fun with these activities as our toddlers do.

Testimonials:

I have been using this curriculum for the past five years. It is truly fabulous! My children are learning so much and are having so much fun. It is so great to have stories and rhymes incorporated with each day's lesson. I love the weekly Thematic units and so do my Parents. The Theme poster's are great to put on your Parent Bulletin Board.

You do have to print out the pintables but the price is so reasonable that it is worth it. Other programs that I have looked into that send you everything already printed out are very expensive. It is worth taking a few minutes to print out what you need for your daily lesson, plus you can use these lessons over and over again, year to year.

I have just started using the infant curriculum and I love it and so do my infants and parents. I cannot imagine running my program without this wonderful curriculum. I hope you guys are around for a long time to come.

Susan – Dallas, Texas

Another Testimonial:

I have been purchasing your curriculum for a few months now and the kids love the program. I just wanted to say “Thanks for sharing your work with us”
