In Our January Preschool Curriculum
Four Weeks Of Lesson Plans: Our January preschool curriculum is broken down into four weeks, each week will have a theme based lesson plan. If you look at the pictures above you can see the four weekly themed lesson plans we have for January. For week one we have New Year's,
for week two we have hibernation, for week three we have colors and for week four we have teddy bears.
Four Themed Posters For January. There are four printable posters for each month purchased. For January you can print out the 4 posters to show each weeks theme, week one is New Year's, week 2 is for hibernation, week 3 is for colors and week 4 is for teddy bears. We find that printing the posters onto heavy paper such as white cardstock paper works best. We like to hang the posters on our bulletin board right above the weeks calendar so the parents can easily see that weeks theme and what the children are going to be doing each day for fun hands on activities.
Letter M, N, & O Display Print out the letters and display on your bulletin board or tape to the wall, place where the children can see the letters throughout the week to remind them the of the letters they are learning this month. For January the children will be learning M, N, & O. Children will be taught the letters by coloring a picture of a word that starts with M and tracing the letter M. They will play games and do other Activities to help teach them this months letters, numbers, shapes and colors.
Number 7 Display.
Print out this weeks number display and tape to your bulletin board or to the wall, place where the children can see the number throughout the month to remind them of the number they are learning. Each month has 1 new number for the children to learn through printable games, worksheets and fun hands on activities.
Weather Chart -
The weather chart is included in every monthly curriculum package.
Print out the weather cards, place some velcro onto the backs of the cards and place them onto a piece of felt.
We start our morning program off each day with circle time. To begin our circle time, we discuss with the children the weather outside. We have the children look out the window and then we ask them "What is the weather outside?" If you have a lot of younger children they may not be able to answer correctly, then we give them hints; such as, (Is the sky white or blue?) if its white does anyone know what that means? (It’s cloudy) "Is it raining outside?" Is it snowing outside?" Is it cloudy outside?" Is it windy outside?" We use our weather cards and each day we have one of the children place the weather cards onto the felt box to show that day's weather. Sometimes it's raining and windy or sunny and windy so then they would place both cards onto the felt box.
Next we focus on the calendar.
I will ask the children "Does anyone know what day it is?" If no one knows what day it is, I
will tell them, "Today Is Thursday." I made a felt calendar with numbers that have Velcro on their backs to stick to the calendar. The children take turns
putting up the numbers each day to show that days date. Some preschoolers are too young to understand what a calendar is but they can learn the numbers on the calendar, what number comes next, and if they hear the days of the week every day and sing a song about the days of the week, in time they will know the days of the week.
If you place velcro onto the backs of your numbers and velcro onto your calendar you can take the numbers on and off. To make it fun for everyone, we take all the numbers off each morning and let the children take turns putting up a number on the calendar, we put the numbers up to that day, such as today is the 7th and we have 12 children. After the first 7 numbers are put on, I will just remove 5 of the numbers and have the children continue putting the numbers back on, so everyone gets a turn. This is our way of doing the calendar, you may find it easier to have one child each day put up one number. It will depend on how many children are in your group, if you have a large group of children it may be easier to have one child each day put up one number.
After we get the numbers put back onto the calendar I will pick one of the children to point to each of the numbers on the calendar as all of us say them out loud, such as today is the 8th. We will count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Tomorrow we will remove all the numbers and then we will put the 8 numbers back on and we will add the number 9. This just makes it more fun the kids as they get to participate in putting up the numbers each day.
Included in our preschool program are blank calendars. You can print one out for each child. I print them onto cardstock paper but they can also be printed onto plain white copy paer. I write the number of the day, such as 2, 5, 30 etc. onto a circle sticker for each child. I use a marker to write the numbers. Then I have them place the circle sticker onto their calendar. On Monday we put on Saturday, Sunday and Mondays stickers with the correct numbers written on them. We do the calendar every morning at circle time. After we put on the sticker I will point to the numbers starting with number one and continute counting until we get to the sticker we just put on.
Seven Days Of The Week Song
There are seven days in the week, seven days in the week. There are seven days in the week. "Hold up 7 fingers"
And I know them all. "Point to self"
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Saturday is the last one. Saturday ends the week. "Teacher will point to each day on the calendar"
Repeat song.

Seven Days Of The Week Song.
After we finish up with the calendar we sing out seven days of the week song.
More Songs.
Each week we teach the children a few new songs or rhymes for that week's theme.
Children like repetition so don't be afraid to sing any song the children really like on a daily basis, but try to add a few new ones each week. In time they will be able to copy the hand movements to the songs and nursery rhymes they hear often and before you know it they will start to sing a word or two. Be sure to include some of the children's favorites each week. Some of our children's favorites are listed below.

Art Time
Above are a few examples of some of our January preschool crafts. There is a daily art project (craft) for the children to do each day that goes along with that weeks theme.
After circle time we have the children come to the table and sit down and get ready for art time. Look in your Toddler or Preschool lesson plans to see which craft you will be doing that day, and if you need to print anything out for that days craft. If we are going to use glue I place the glue into tiny plastic cups such as the kind you get with the sample play dough. I only put a small amount in the cup; just enough for that days project. I give the toddlers large brushes to use and the preschoolers smaller ones. If we are going to paint I make sure each child has some type of paint shirt on. If you do not have enough paint shirts, you can always use an old sweat shirt and cut off the arms. Anything will work. We use our old and stained up wash clothes for paint rags. I just wet the paint rag and it keep it handy for spills or for a child who is done before the others, or we may keep a dish pan with a small amount of water in it for the children who finish early to rinse off until they can get into the bathroom to wash up with soap and warm water.
